Students will inquire into central issues including the limits of where "America" is situation both as a region and as a collective experience. Students will explore art practices ranging from indigenous art from pre-contact through contemporary periods as well development of national identities in the modern period. Students use the various methodologies of Art Education to examine early human development in the visual arts, learning fundamental criteria for judging and understanding elementary artwork. Course includes studio work in drawing, painting, and crafts as well as relevant Art Historical readings and viewing. Prerequisite: completion of GE A. Sophomore standing or higher and major in Liberal Studies (teaching), Child, Adolescent and Family Studies (CAFS), or Art Education.

Students explore ideas in composition, line, and proportion as they relate to the history and possibilities of drawing. Course includes practice in contour drawing, value drawing, and structural drawing, and will help students to develop a foundation of drawing skills that will set the basis for future art making. Students develop an understanding of the history, possibilities, and problems of this longest standing practice within the visual arts. Using a variety of painting media to challenge and explore the 2D pictorial plane, students apply design fundamentals to graphic space, visual organization and imagery. Materials fee required. Students explore the possibilities related to four processes of Printmaking: Screen Printing, Etching, Relief Printing and Digital Printing. Students will develop a technical understanding of each of these processes and apply this learning to advanced creative concepts. Students develop a technical and theoretical understanding of Digital Photography and/or the artistic traditions and processes of Analog Wet-Lab Photography. Moving past the scope of a traditional photography class, ART 3230 students will pursue the captured image beyond standard 2D presentation, pushing their digital and photographic work into time-based practices and processes of digital manipulation. Students develop an understanding of materials, technologies, histories, and aesthetic concepts related to contemporary sculpture. Course work will include the hands-on, independent creation of 3D sculptural works incorporating concepts of matter, form, content, and context. Materials fee required. Prerequisite: ART 2300.

Students explore the ceramic processes of hand building, wheel-throwing, glazing, and firing. Techniques are introduced as practiced by both the studio potter and the ceramic sculptor. Materials fee required. Course may be repeated once for credit by non-Art majors. Prerequisite: ART 2300 or Kinesiology major with junior standing or higher.

Students develop an advanced understanding of the deliberate use of time within contemporary art. Course includes lecture and hands-on practice in mediums including (but not limited to) Video Art, Film Art, Sound Art, Conceptual Art, Performance Art, Participatory Art, Interactive Art, Relational Aesthetics, and Post-net Art. Materials fee required. Prerequisite: ART 2220 or ART 2400.

Students develop an understanding of basic Animation concepts through an intensive experience with practical Animation methods. Production of animated shorts will be the primary focus of this course, and Animation students will develop the skill set and level of commitment necessary to their completion and perfection. Art students enrolled in Art 3410 will engage Animation as a lens through which to reconsider their own creative practices. Materials fee required. Prerequisite: ART 2220 or ART 2400.

Students examine the major artists and schools of art and architecture in Western Europe in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Course content is organized regionally, placing much emphasis on Baroque and Rococo art theories. Prerequisite: ART 2608.

From the Industrial Revolution to the Paris International Exposition of 1900, this course explores a century of Western art and architecture defined by major discoveries, cultural and political upheavals, the introduction of new technologies, and radical ideals. Students examine the consequences of major events in the world on European art, the impact of artistic innovations on the world, and their continuing effects in society today. Lecture/discussion. The history of modern art was fueled by a cyclical need to explore new materials, create new forms, develop new concepts, explore newer materials, and so on. From Art Nouveau to the New Wave, this course examines American and European art and architecture of the 20th century. Prerequisite: ART 2608 and junior standing or higher.

From late Modernism to the Contemporary art world, this class explores movements in art since the late 1940s. Particular attention will be paid to the development and subsequent implosion of both Modern and Postmodern premises. Prerequisite: ART 2608.

Students explore the history and development of photography as an art medium from its origins in the 1830s to the present, examining the qualities of different techniques and modes of expression. Students explore the history of female accomplishments in the visual arts, including an examination of the many ways that gender has been constructed in the visual world. Focus will be on women, both as artists and as subjects of art.

Students examine the painting, sculpture, architecture, and popular culture of China, Japan, and India. The organization is thematic, rather than strictly chronological, to emphasize the major philosophies and uniquely non-western perspectives that have shaped art in the East. Prerequisite: ART 2608.

This course provides an in-depth exploration into the issues and conditions covered by artists in Latin America as well as within Diaspora communities working within the United States. Student will inquire into central issues including the limits of where "Latin America" is situated both as a region and as a collective experience. Students will explore art practices ranging from the post-WWII period through current trends in contemporary art practice. Prerequisite: ART 2608 or ART 2708.

Students are introduced to the variety of theoretical and philosophical approaches to art. From the birth of art history as a discipline to the current (and often controversial) theories of visual culture, this class covers a variety of ways of looking at art. Prerequisite: Art major with Junior standing or higher; ART 3620, ART 3630 or ART 3670.

Students explore the concepts, principles, and practices used in managing an art gallery, including the curating, preparing, and mounting of art exhibitions. Students will aid in the preparation and installation of professional-grade art exhibitions as well as design theoretical exhibitions of their own. Course includes work in grant writing and press release writing. Prerequisite: two courses from ART 2200 - 2708.

Students directly assist a professional artist who is visiting campus to create a public artwork or an installation at a university gallery. Students will have direct access and responsibility relating to all aspects of the art-making process, from conception to fabrication to installation. Specific skills taught will be dictated by the requirements of the project design. May be repeated for credit up the a maximum of 9 units.

An in-depth study of the professional standards of fine art exhibition and discourse. Course includes instruction in art writing, reading, and criticism, development of online portfolios, documentation of work, and an introduction to the structures of art exhibition and sale. Prerequisite: Art major with senior standing and completion of ART 4000.

Students produce a culminating body of work leading up to a final exhibition in the University gallery. Additionally, students will develop a professional portfolio, artist's statement, artist's resume, and personal biography for future use as a professionally exhibiting artist. Materials fee required. Students explore the history, culture, application, and impact of craft on elementary and secondary education. The course provides an in-depth exploration of craft in education through the hands-on use of various crafts including textiles, ceramics, jewelry and fibers. Students gain practical experience in the fields of professional art practice and/or gallery practice at an off-campus site. Students are assigned to various professional art producers, museums or galleries and work under joint supervision of the host facility and the course instructor-internship coordinator. Offered only on a credit, no-credit basis. Arrangements should be made with the internship coordinator well in advance of the term in which the internship is to be taken; no retroactive credit will be allowed. Prerequisites: ART 3000 or ART 4010. Students who take this course must have a minimum overall 3.0 GPA and have completed 15 or more units with the Art major.

Students research, develop, and perfect an extensive research paper or curriculum module on a topic that is an outgrowth of the subjects studies within the Art History or Art Education major. The topic will be selected in consultation with an advisor and with the consent of the art faculty. Prerequisite: At least 90 units, completion of JYDR, and ART 4000.
