Chinese (CHIN)
An introduction to the nature of the discipline and the fundamentals of language and culture. The main goal of this course is to begin to learn to speak, read, write, and comprehend spoken Chinese at the novice-low level. Special emphasis is placed on developing communication skills and on increasing awareness of cultures in the Chinese-speaking world. Corequisite: CHIN 1001
Language laboratory to accompany CHIN 1000. Offered on a credit/no-credit grade basis. Corequisite: CHIN 1000.
A continuation of CHIN 1000. This course continues to develop the student's ability to speak, read, write and comprehend spoken Chinese. Students should achieve the novice-mid skill level. Special emphasis is placed on developing communication skills and on increasing awareness of cultures in the Chinese-speaking world. Prerequisite: CHIN 1000 with grade of C- or better, placement, or consent of chair.

A review of fundamentals and a more in-depth examination of the Chinese language leading to student performance at the novice-high level. Continued focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and increasing knowledge of Chinese-speaking cultures. Active use of language skills. Prerequisite: CHIN 1010 with grade of C- or better, placement, or consent of chair.

Course designed for lower level study abroad credit in Chinese. May be repeated up to a maximum of 6 units. Prerequisite: Consent of chair.
